The Christian and The Bra

November 3, 2006

An alarming number of Christians are
addicted to porn. Yes, and that includes
pastors, prayer leaders, young Christians,
old Christians.

Why? You may ask. Everybody seems to
know why. Of course it’s the devil. And our
human nature. And the porn guys. And our
weak faith. And so on.

(WARNING: This is not another homily about
why pornography is bad for you and 15 steps
to break the porn habit, blah blah blah. We
are dealing with real issues here, not fluff.)

How does one break free from porn?

By relying on God alone.

Obviously this sounds too simple, perhaps even
naive. How can merely relying on God break such
a strong addiction as pornography? Isn’t that a
passive approach? What action steps should I
take?

Truth be told: the Christian life is a relationship,
not a formula. We are called to live the life
of Christ – a life of victory over temptation and
sin.

This is the life Paul describes:

[You] are not controlled by
your sinful nature. You are
controlled by the Spirit if you
have the Spirit of God living in
you. (And remember that those
who do not have the Spirit of
Christ living in them are not
Christians at all.)
Romans 8:9

But how exactly do I rely on God?

By continually asking Him to help you.

We are not left to our own devices,
forever looking for the magic formula to
freedom. God is more than willing to help
us live the pure life He has called us to.
Yet His help is not automatic; we have
to ask for it.

God says: “If you will only obey me and
let me help you…” (Isaiah 1:19)

Am I saying that once you ask God for
help, BOOM, you’ll never slip into the
pornography trap again, never get
tempted? I wish I could tell you that.
However the truth is most people still
stumble, even after asking for God’s help.

Thank God, there’s hope! God promises
us that though we may slip, we will not fall.

The steps of the godly are directed by the Lord
He delights in every detail of their lives.
Though they stumble, they will not fall,
for the Lord holds them by the hand
Psalm 37:23-24

God is more practical than most people think.
He understands you will make mistakes. As you
continually ask for His help, you will discover
that His inner strength will keep you from porn.
Even if you do slip, His Spirit will make you
realize your sin and ask for forgiveness.

Why not ask for His help now?

You may not be sure of the Rapture, but you can be sure of one thing: Christ is coming soon to a theatre near you.

First it was The Passion of The Christ. More recently, it’s The Da Vinci Code.

What’s really behind all this interest in Christ? Love or lucre?

Some believe this is creating more awareness about Christ. Others wonder what kind of awareness is actually being created. Still others are only aware of the hype and all those Da Vinci Code spin-offs.

What do YOU think?
